Bachelor's Program in International Business
Bachelor's degree
The Bachelor’s of Science degree in International Business from Aalto University provides students with an in-depth knowledge of international business within three years. This international business degree is a highly international program, with faculty members coming from all over the world to teach. In addition, students are expected to study abroad for one semester, enhancing their international perspective. Offered at Aalto’s Mikkeli Campus, the Bachelor in International Business is made up of 3-week modules, each requiring 3 hours of classroom time each day for 5 days each week. This intense modular format fosters a dynamic interaction between professors and students. As a student in this business program, you will develop a strong knowledge base and wide-ranging set of professional skills. Graduates with a Bachelor’s Degree in International Business will have a firm foundation for advanced academic study, whether in Finland or abroad, or for entering the global business market.

Program content

The nature of studies in the Bachelor’s Program in International Business is very active and intensive. Studies are divided into three-week modules, maintaining a fast pace and sharp focus. The comprehensive teaching methods include interactive lectures, group work, video presentations and company projects, as well as independent and theoretical academic work. Various teaching methods provide an interesting, challenging and motivating learning environment. Many business and public sector representatives, including alumni, serve as guest lecturers in the courses. Students take field trips and complete projects for companies in various courses. The cooperation with local and international companies continues outside of the lectures too: on career days, field trips and excursions. The Bachelor’s Program in Mikkeli focuses on a single major: International Business. The domain-specific specialisation depends on the courses you choose – however, whether it’s accounting, economics, finance, information systems, management or marketing, the perspective always remains international.

Year 1

Students complete the required core courses, business communications studies and language courses.

Year 2

In addition to some required courses, students get to choose their favourite elective courses, for example:

Students also get an introduction to research methods after which they start writing their Bachelor’s Thesis. The purpose of the Bachelor’s Thesis is to develop students’ ability to carry out independent research work in the field of international business. The Capstone Course wraps up the learning into one extensive package as an overview and recap of the two years and is based on a business strategy game.

Year 3

Students study abroad and complete their minor during an exchange semester at one of the program’s many partner universities around the world. Courses can be chosen flexibly based on the student’s interest.

Upon completion of the program, students will graduate with a Bachelor of Science (Economics and Business Administration) degree.

Continuing studies

After graduating from the BScBA Programme, students can continue studies in a variety of master’s degree programs at the School of Business Otaniemi campus.

Career opportunities

Upon graduation, most students choose to take advantage of their automatic study right to a Master’s Program at the Aalto University School of Business at the Otaniemi Campus. However, students are also fully equipped to enter the global job market straight after finishing the Bachelor’s program. The completed degree offers a vast variety of international career options both in Finland and abroad. The alumni of the program work internationally in many positions related to their studies as managers, experts, consultants in marketing, finance, trade, technology or as entrepreneurs. To ease the transfer from school to work life, the program invites we are havingmany business and public sector representatives to serve as guest lecturers in the courses. Alumni relations are close and act as an important employment channel for Mikkeli Campus graduates. Aalto University has well-established career services that help you find employment in Finland and abroad. Aalto students tend to find good positions with ease upon graduation. An active entrepreneurship community is also present at Aalto, which can help as a springboard for founding your company. Bachelor's in Design
Bachelor's degree
This is a prestigious one-year program in design practice, theory and research for high achieving students who have completed a relevant undergraduate degree. You will undertake coursework, research and practical training and carry out an independent studio project in your selected specialist area of study, working closely with a supervisor who will provide you with individual guidance and academic counselling. The course will extend your professional expertise but also offers a pathway to higher level training in design research. The collaborative design specialist area of study brings together design thinking, methods and experiences from a range of design discipline specialist areas of study. This Honours specialist area of study responds to the emerging need for designers with multidisciplinary skill sets that can apply design processes that engage spatial, communication, experiential and object-based solutions. You will be able to traverse a range of employment options, including; mediated experiences and spatial design practices; products and packaging; and the increasing range of intersected real and virtual service processes (such as designing for banking, airlines and other service delivery industries). You will develop advanced strategic and critical design thinking skills that respond to current user needs and industry challenges as well as the requisite research and academic acuity to pursue higher qualifications. The communication design specialist area of study will prepare you for a design future in the areas of graphic design, visual communication and digital media. It will equip you with the ability to work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams: marketers, service providers, clients and other designers; and apply advanced visual and experiential processes across a range of communication challenges. These include such areas as corporate identity, interactive environments, interaction designs, information designs, analogue and digital publishing, advertising, promotion, packaging, illustration, typography, way-finding systems, animation, and motion design. You will develop advanced strategic and critical design thinking skills that respond to current user needs and industry challenges as well as the requisite research and academic acuity to pursue higher qualifications. The industrial design specialist area of study will prepare you for a design future in the fields of industrial and product design and other related areas of industry and commerce. Industrial design is concerned with the research and development of design in consumer and industrial products used by people. These range from industrial equipment to motor vehicles and from medical equipment to domestic appliances. You will acquire the skills to work as a part of a creative team involving engineering, production and marketing. You will develop advanced strategic and critical design thinking skills that respond to current user needs and industry challenges as well as the requisite research and academic acuity to pursue higher qualifications. The spatial design specialist area of study will equip you with the industry-ready skills to create the spaces, lighting and objects that encourage people to engage and interact. You will acquire advanced design knowledge relevant to commercial and domestic interiors, entertainment venues, festivals, exhibitions or theatre sets. Spatial designers create experiences that communicate ideas, values and stories. You will develop the collaborative and design management skills that enable you to work with developers, builders and architects, across a wide range of projects that may include commercial, cultural, institutional, hospitality and domestic spaces. You will develop advanced strategic and critical design thinking skills that respond to current user needs and industry challenges as well as the requisite research and academic acuity to pursue higher qualifications.

In a rapidly transforming profession, designers need to be constantly developing innovative skills and knowledge to respond and be a leader in their field. Positioned at the intersection of several creative disciplines our Master of Design provides you with the platform to explore advanced principles in contemporary design that will enhance your design practice and provide you with the platform to be an innovative leader. This project-based and studio focused course offers you the opportunity to extend your learning within a specialisation area of interaction design, multimedia design or collaborative design. Alternatively, you can choose from a range of units from across these three areas to construct a specialisation in Advanced Study in Design. Central to this course is four core design studios that will engage you with design systems, services, processes, environments and objects. In addition to the core design studios, you will undertake studies in Design Thinking allowing you to analyse real-world challenges through design thinking strategies and approaches. Further studies will build your capabilities in design research, management and entrepreneurialism and culminating in an exegesis. This program is ideal for people with an undergraduate degree in any discipline who are keen to enter the expanding fields of professional design engagement, or for design practitioners aiming to upgrade their expertise. Choosing the advanced studies in design specialition, you can construct an individual program of study from across interaction design, multimedia design and collaborative design. This enables you to tailor your unit choices while addressing the fundamental principles of advanced design practice and thinking. It’ll inspire you to connect research and practice across the design disciplines, and to become a thoughtful design practitioner. You’ll broaden your knowledge of key design constructs, deepen your professional learning in design areas of interest, and advance your capacity as a design professional. Collaborative design places you conceptually and practically at the intersection of interior, graphic and industrial design practice. The program will set you design challenges involving image, text, products, narratives, systems, services, public and private space, materiality and virtuality. You’ll develop independent conceptual and practical design skills alongside an ability to be part of collaborative design processes. You’ll expand your awareness across design disciplines; develop multidisciplinary design expertise; and build broader skills in leadership, professional adaptability and complex project planning. The interaction design specialisation develops your skills in the design of contemporary artefacts, products and services that engage with interactive, user-focused technologies and processes. These can include, but aren’t limited to, health and medical equipment, ‘smart’ furniture, educational toys, wearable technologies, information kiosks and transport systems. You’ll use a diverse range of interactive processes, including the application of advanced technologies; electronics and programming; physical and virtual interface manipulation; engineering and material fabrication; and rapid prototyping. The specialisation gives you an understanding of the relationship between interactive activities, products and human behaviour. Multimedia design develops your skills in digital communication environments. This includes designing for the web; motion and animation; and interactive touchscreen devices and surfaces. Emphasising an advanced knowledge of existing and emerging digital design processes and systems, this specialisation embraces projects of varied scale, from hand-held smart devices to large public interactive screens. It develops your ability to build a communication narrative; use multimedia processes to fill community and business needs; and understand the end-user’s engagement with projects or products such as websites, apps and other screen-based media.
