Special Studies in Teaching English as a Foreign Language

If you would like to choose your own schedule of classes from Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and other academic areas, Special Studies in TEFL may be right for you. Special Studies in TEFL is a full-time three-month program of select courses to enhance your preparation and expertise in teaching English. You must enroll in a total of 15 UC San Diego Extension units, with the advice and approval of the TEFL Coordinator.

Admission requirements

Below, please find a list of the minimum requirements for acceptance. We carefully review the background and qualifications of each applicant to ensure that those admitted into the Special Studies in TEFL program will have a successful experience.

Language Proficiency Requirement:

In order to participate in this program, you must have one of the following scores:
  • TOEFL paper-based: 525
  • TOEFL internet-based: 69
  • TOEIC: 740
  • IELTS: 6.5
  • Cambridge Advanced or Proficiency Exams: Pass
  • CEFR: B2
  • GTEC CBT: 1126
  • EIKEN: Pre-1
  • PTE: 47
  • Recommendation letter from UC San Diego ELI advisor for prospective students who excelled in ELI courses and programs (in place of obtaining an official language proficiency score)

Other Admission Requirements:

  • Copy of your transcripts in English for the two most recent years of your academic studies
  • A one-page statement explaining why you would like to take any TEFL Certificate program

  • Teaching Young English Learners in the Primary Grades (Ages 4-8)
  • Teaching English to the Intermediate Young Learner (Ages 8-11)
Note: TEYL classes cannot be guaranteed and may be cancelled due to low enrollments.& If a class is cancelled, the TEFL advisor will assist you in selecting a different class that meets your goals.

Teaching English as a Foreign Language Professional

Italian Intensive Course

The Italian Intensive course in Florence or Milan is suitable if you wish to improve your Italian language skills for general use, your study or work. Course Objectives Linguaviva Intensive Italian courses  will help you achieve confident and effective Italian language skills for your everyday social, study and work needs. Course Content In the morning in the Italian Standard course you will develop your general Italian language skills. In the afternoon classes focus is on spoken communication through discussions, role plays, conversations. You will also be given an insight into Italian culture and lifestyle through lectures and practical language activities. In our Intensive Italian language courses in Florence or Milan we offer Common European Framework A1, A2, B1, B2, C1levels ranging from complete beginner to advanced. Each level can be completed in 4 weeks. At the end of each Italian course, you can progress to the next level after successful completion of a test. At the end of your Intensive course, you can ask for a Linguaviva certificate showing the length of the Italian course and the language level achieved.

Linguaviva One to One Italian course in Florence or Milan is a fully personalised, intensive Italian language training. It is particularly suited to professionals and executives. In our individual Italian language courses you can focus on learning specialised vocabulary and developing both oral and written skills related to your studies or profession. PREPARATORY COURSE FOR UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE EXAMINATION IN FLORENCE AND MILAN

First part: Italian for academic purposes.

The programme is designed to help students achieve the academic Italian language requirements to access Italian Universities. The course will provide students with the language and study skills needed for the Italian examination which is a mandatory requirement for international students applying on Bachelors Degrees in Italy.

Second part: Academic subjects.

The course is structured according to the indications given by the Italian Ministry of Education on the content of the test. In the courses students will learn about how the exams works and they will get plenty of practice using the types of questions they will see in the exam. Students are given a specific training for scientific subjects as as Math, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Logic etc. according to the degree course chosen by the student.Student will exercise also on past exam tests. SHORT PROGRAMME FOR UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE EXAMINATION IN MILAN You may also attend a preparatory course focusing exclusively on the scientific subjects. Italian Standard Course

The course will help you focus on the practical aspects of Italian language and develop everyday communication skills. The Italian standard course in Florence OR Milan will  enable you to improve all four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Course objectives The aim of the Italian course is to develop your practical and communication skills. By learning and practicing Italian in fun and focused lessons you will increase your confidence in using Italian, consolidate your language knowledge and achieve greater fluency. As no translation is used in the classroom you will be making rapid progress in Italian. Course content On the first day of your Italian language course, if you are a beginner student you will immediately start with your first Italian lesson. If you have previous knowledge of Italian you will take a written and oral placement test, so that we can place you in the appropriate group for your Italian language level. We offer Common European Framework A1, A2, B1, B2, C1levels from complete beginner to advanced. Each level can be completed in 4 weeks and after successful completion of a progress test you can move up to the next level.For your Italian courses, you will use a textbook which can be purchased at school and your teacher will provide extra learning material. At the end of your Italian course, you can ask for a Linguaviva certificate showing the length of the course and the Italian language level achieved.
